A promise fulfilled on Genny's wedding day

by Susan Palmes-Dennis

ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina---It was a nice early autumn afternoon at Morning Glory Farm where the wedding of now Mr and Mrs. Patrick Hang (née Genevieve Megan Cordery) was held last Oct. 2. And do I have stories to tell:

For starters, the wine served as toast to the newlyweds was gifted by the bride to her Dad about 15 years ago. The story went like this; On the bride’s 13th birthday, the Cordery family took a trip to Biltmore House/ Estate at Asheville, North Carolina.

Genny had some money to spend but instead of buying something for herself, she bought wine for her Dad Richard.

Of course she was asked if she was old enough to drink. But the smart girl that she is, Genny simply told the clerk she wanted to buy wine for her Dad.

Genny’s gesture showed just how much she loves and knows her father who loves wine.

‘For you Dad,’ Genny told her father Richard who replied that he would drink it when she got married. The promise was made at the beautiful Vanderbilt winery.

The wine in question, a Cabernet Saugvignon limited release, stayed at the Cordery houshold’s wine cabinet for 15 years until Oct. 2, 2021.

At the reception, Richard Cordery’s eyes welled up in tears as he shared this story drawing ‘ohs,’ and ‘ahs’ from those in attendance.  His daughter Genevieve teared up on seeing her father smile while recounting this story.

But most touching was when Richard told the newlyweds ‘to love each and cherish each other’ and take their inspiration from his love to his wife Malou Cordery.

For a moment, the tent was quiet, while Patrick looked into Genny’s eyes, gazing at each other with the people in and around the tent in a standstill.

On that wedding, two families were united in love and it’s easily one of the happiest days in their lives. As the toast was offered and Richard Cordery lifted his wine glass high in the air, the guests joined and clinched their glasses in celebration.

To the newlyweds, I join the families in saying ‘Cheers’ and a happy, prosperous married life ahead.
