ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina—The other fashion presenter in the 33rd Annual FACC (Filipino-American Community of the Carolinas) Gala scheduled this Saturday (Nov. 12) is Edelweiss De Guzman-Vogel, a visual artist and art educator whose work already reached the Paris runway.

FACC 2nd vice-president Beth Kremer said Edelweiss will present  the Visayan island’s clothing style during the ‘Tradisyon(al) Na Kasuutan Ng Mga Filipino’ portion of the 33rd FACC Gala.

Edelweiss is one of three Fil-Am fashion designers to be featured in the program along with Venancio Tadeo and Malou Tabada-Cordery.

The Samar dress made of 'banig' or buri.
The ‘Tradisyon Na Kasuutan Ng Mga Filipino’ mini-fadhion show is drawing interest from the Filipino-American community right now.

Tadeo will present the Luzon islands traditional clothing while Cordery will feature the traditional fashion of five tribes in Mindanao.

Two creations by Edelweiss were presented in previous events while the third latest is displayed at the corporate headquarters of Lending Tree in Charlotte,

These creations in relation to their locations in the Visayas are as follows:

1. Iloilo City in Western Visayas: The dress inspired by the local patron saint, Our Lady of the Candles or Candelaria. The dress is made of lace and satin fabric. The silhouette of the dress has puffy sleeves. This dress was made for a show dubbed ‘Raw Natural Born Artists’ a few years back.

2. Samar Philippines, Eastern Visayas: This dress is made of banig, a handwoven mat made of buri or pandan sourced from sea grass level. This dress was made in 2014 for an art exhibit called Convergence Art that was curated by the Cabarrus Arts Council.

3. The third dress is inspired by the Sinulog Festival in Cebu City, Cebu province in Central Visayas. The material is from vinyl billboard that was taken down last year and created by her fellow artist and educator Caroline Rust.

The material was a leftover from an ArtPop show that De Guzman did previously.  ‘I was supposed to represent Luzon because I’m from Manila (her grandparents are Tagalog from Quezon and Bicol provinces). But this past Sunday I was told to do the Visayas island so I had to change my concept,’ Edelweiss said.

The Artworks of de Guzman is on display at Charlotte Center City newsstands, billboards in Charlotte Area, Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) and even in Edsa in the Philippines.

Edelweiss teaches visual art at Bradley IB World School in Iredell, NC and she’s a Cities Program Class 2022 Artist.

She is very active in the community and was 2017 FACC 2nd Vice President.  Registration on the 33rd Gala Night at the Hilton Charlotte Airport Hotel starts at 4 pm, Saturday, Nov. 12.
