Pinoy fashion in the spotlight on 33rd FACC Gala Night

By Susan Palmes-Dennis

Rockingham, North Carolina—One of the featured events at the 33rd FACC (Filipino-American Community of the Carolinas) Gala Night on Nov. 12 is a fashion show covering the three major islands of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

FACC 2nd Vice President Beth Kremer, who’s in charge of this year’s Gala Night, said the fashion event dubbed as the ‘Tradisyon Na Kasuutan Ng Mga Pilipino (Traditional Filipino Costume) will showcase the creations of Fil-Am fashion designers of Charlotte namely Venancio Tadeo, Edelweiss de Guzman-Vogel and Malou Cordery.

The works of de Guzman-Vogel and Cordery were shown on the runways of  North Carolina in the US and Paris, France. All three—Tadeo, de Guzman-Vogel and Cordery--are active FACC members and former FACC officers.

As explained to yours truly by Beth Kremer, Tadeo’s creations will cover the Luzon islands while de Guzman-Vogel’s creations cover the Visayas islands.

Cordery, a native of Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental province, northern Mindanao, told yours truly that she will put on display her creations which are her modern interpretation of traditional clothing by five tribes in Mindanao.

These creations are:

1.  Pangalay (finger dance) from the Tausug Tribe of Sulu Island in Northern Philippines (modeled by Itzel Gonzales).

2.  The T’ boli Tribe of South Cotabato Philippines. (Modeled by Jessica Cameron, Miss NC Spectacular America).

3.  Lapuyan, the home of Subanon indigenous tribe of Samboanga. (Modeled by Merideth Utt).

4.  Lumad Bukidnon/Manobo tribe of Misamis Oriental Philippines, a non-Muslim indigenous tribe. (Modeled by Kate McCreary ).

5.  Singkil Princess from a folk dance performed by the Maranao people of Lake Lanao. The dance is a pre-Islamic interpretation of the ancient Hindu the Ramayana. The outfit is modeled by Gabby Ortega, reigning Miss Teen North Carolina.

Incidentally, Gabby Ortega competed in the 2022 Miss Teen USA pageant where she won Miss Photogenic and won second place in Best Costume with her outfit in that event designed by Cordery.

This year’s 33rd FACC Gala Night is the first held after a two-year hiatus brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The theme presentation ‘Let’s Go Travel to the Pearl of the Orient Seas the Philippines’ will be done by the FACC 2022 Board of Directors.

Registration for the 33rd FACC Gala Night at the Hilton Charlotte Airport Hotel at 4 pm, Kremer said. As always, I’ll update you on details of the event.
